Nicholas Roerich describes in this story their meeting with a learned lama. They went to talk about the sacred Place: Shambhala. The story is evocative of the atmosphere of veneration, carefulness, and peaceful search.
"Flame in Chalice" is the English translation of Roerich's "Цветы Мории" ("Flowers of Morya"). "Цветы Мории" was published in 1921 in Berlin (in Russian) and contains Roerich's poems written in 1916-1920. The English translation was published in 1929 under the title Flame in Chalice, so that it would not bear connection to the first two books of Agni Yoga series: Leaves of Morya's Garden. "Pis'mena" was the Soviet time edition of the poems.
Irina Corten's text is a clever introduction to this book of poems. It emphasizes the progressive transformation of a disciple along the poems. This text is shown on the page Spiritual Pilgrimage
